Candido Portinari
Return From The Fair (1940)
oil on canvas
40 x 32"
Gift of Jose Gomez-Sicre

Portinari was committed to a socially concerned art which found expression in both easel painting and the mural.  His paintings have a lyric, at times surreal, quality and are rooted in themes related to rural life in his native state of Sao Paulo- peasant family groups, popular celebrations, and life on the large plantations.  A sense of movement is conveyed through rhythmically articulated figures.  The scarecrow is a recurring reference.
